In the midst of girls being vaccinated in the UK programme at schools. Decided to also have boy vaccinated privately after listening to one of the member's of the government's advisory panel and reading the literature.
Reading the Gardasil leaflet, it is intended to protect against diseases caused by Human Papillomovirus types 6, 11, 16 and 18. For girls, the obvious benefit is the well documented and discussed protection against cervical cancer. In addition, HPV types 6 and 11 are responsible for approximately 90% of genital wart cases (which both males and females can get).
The vaccine is not used to treat HPV related diseases. I have decided to adopt a prevention strategy before the age of 15.
